Public Works

The Department of Public Works encompasses a wide range of tasks and duties essential to public welfare and quality of life. These men and women take great pride in their job to protect the rural aesthetic that many are drawn to Millstone Township for. The following are some of the ways Public Works strive to help our community:

 Roads:

  • 122.4 miles of Township maintained roads or 244 lane miles.

That is equivalent to a four-lane highway from Millstone to Manhattan

  • 68 miles are county roads
  • 27 miles are state highways

Snow and Ice removal:

  • A snowstorm of just four inches equates to removing over 150,000 cubic yards of snow.
  • 161 Cul-de-sacs and 270 intersections equate to 15,000 cubic yards of snow to remove after a four-inch snowstorm.
  • Millstone Township Fire Department has also stated that they have noticed a decrease in motor vehicle accidents during and after snowstorms in the last five years.

 Buildings:

  • Public Works maintains 13 buildings and 3 park restrooms

Grounds:

  • 1,130 acres of property mowed monthly
  • Park Features:
    • 10 Multiuse turf fields for football, lacrosse, field hockey, and flag football
    • 7 Baseball Fields
    • 10 Tennis Courts and 7 Pickle Ball Courts
    • 5 Basketball Courts
    • 5 Playground Areas
    • 1 Handball Court and 1 Tetherball game
    • 25 Miles of Cinder walking path
    • 2 Volleyball Courts and 2 Bocci Ball Courts
    • Over 17 Miles of Multiuse trails

Storm water management:

A unique feature of the Township of Millstone is having one of the highest elevations in central New Jersey (Disbrow Hill).  This is why we have seven different water sheds. The township has headwaters that lead to the Raritan River, Delaware River, and the Toms River.

  • 2,400 structures (metal grates that collect water, manholes and other storm water structures).
  • Several hundred miles of storm sewer pipes, channels, and swales

First Responders:

President George W. Bush issued Homeland Security Presidential Directive 5 (HSPD-5), Management of Domestic Incidents, in 2003, in which a public works response to emergencies and disasters is recognized as an absolute necessity.

  • Participate in emergencies involving road closures, power failures, flooding, and storms, with the Office of Emergency Management, Millstone Township Fire Department and First Aid.
  • Provide mutual aid, heavy equipment, and operators to remove dangerous structures after catastrophic damage to buildings.

Miscellaneous Tasks:

Among the many duties that Public Works undertakes, some other aspects the department provides support:

  • Seed, fertilizer, and pesticide applications at parks and grounds.
  • Setup and Breakdown after events like Millstone Day, Memorial Day Parade, and other events for various groups in the township.
